If you think beauty is enough, you may as well let the mute compete in these international beauty pageants. As the case maybe, pressure brings out the best in diamonds but in many instances the worst in women.
You could laugh all you want. But you can’t discount the fact that being in a much-hyped, much-televised global beauty contest is nerve-wracking. In fact, putting your best foot forward in these predicament of a show may require you wear a stiffener – if ever there was one – for your trembling knees. Well, we can blame it on the audience who may want more than they can even handle had they been in the same position. Answering random probing questions is never an easy task especially if you’re worried you may lose a button or two in the eyes of millions of spectators or fumble on your stiletto. Aristotle and Plato, be warned.
Ladies and gentlemen, 10 of the most off-tangent answers belted out in a global beauty contest by beautiful women – including our very own Pinays.
#10: Miss Universe 2001 “Beauty and Brains” Question
To start the ball rolling, let’s hear it from our very own Miss Philippines 2001 representative to arguably the most-coveted beauty crown of all: Miss Universe.
Question: “If you could be beautiful and not so smart, or brilliant and not so beautiful, what would you be and why?”
Candidate:
“Well, I’d rather choose to be beautiful, um because, to be beautiful it’s natural. But being smart you can learn…you can learn, um a lot of things…a lot of things from the experience…you can learn from a lot of things being smart.”
My take: I think what she wants to say is to be smart is easier as you can learn things (e.g., read books etc.) but to be beautiful is a gift from Above. Right thought, in a way, but weakly said.
In the hot seat: Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Jeanie Anderson
#9:Bb. Pilipinas 2008 on The Role of Family
Pressure can certainly put beetles and bees inside your head. I believe this would have been an easy question, had it not been in a national beauty contest.
Question: “What role did your family play to you as candidate to Binibining Pilipinas?”
Candidate:
“Well, my family’s role for me is so important because there was the wa- they’re, they was the one who’s very (laughs). Oh I’m so sorry. Um, my family, my family. Oh my god. I’m…
Judge Paolo Bediones tries to save the situation: Pwede ka mag tagalog. Okay lang.
Final Answer:
“Ok, I’m so sorry. I, I told you that I’m so confident… Eto, um, wait… (laughs). Um, sorry guys because this was really my first pageant ever because I’m only 17 years old and (laughs) I, I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of the top 10. Hmmm, so… but I said that my family is the most important persons in my life. Thank you.”
My Take: She sure has plenty of things to say bout her family. Must truly love them. And yes, she’s so confident.
In the Hot Seat: Janina San Miguel
#8: Miss Universe 2010 on Big Mistake
Most everyone would remember this. The answer makes sense, if not for a small detail.
This may not be in the Philippines but since this involved Filipinos, they might as well hold it in Manila. Had this not been a beauty contest, this would have become a class act in a comedy bar.
Question: “What is one big mistake you’ve made and what did you do to make it right?”
Answer:
“You know what, sir, in my 22 years of existence, I can say that there’s nothing major major problem that I’ve done in my life because I’m very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I’m here. Thank you, thank you so much!”
My Take: No major, major problem here, just minor, minor.
In the Hot Seat: Venus Raj
#7: Miss Hawaii America 1992 on Being American
Let’s just say the lady had an audio problem. She did not hear the question right – if at all.
Question: “Why are you proud to be an American?”
Answer:
“We are truly the land of the great. From the rocky shores of … Hawaii…to the beautiful sandy beaches of … Hawaii … America is our home.”
My Take: As I said, she did not hear the question right? Isn’t it obvious.
In the Hot Seat: Nadine Tanega
#6: Miss World 2000
Beauty queens from India have been a light in a dark tunnel for the most part as their sense of wisdom seems pretty develop. But this one seems an exception.
Question: “Who do you think is the most successful woman living today and why?”
Answer:
“There are a lot of people I admire, but one of the most admirable people is Mother Teresa, who has been so compassionate, considerate and kind.”
My Take: Does she know that Mother Teresa is dead? Perhaps not.
In the Hot Seat: Miss India Priyanka Chopra
#5: Miss Universe 2003 on Being Water or Fire
I believe this is the “most funniest”. Yes, I meant that. Most funniest means not only funniest it’s double that – most funniest. (And my MS Word 2013 just can’t help but underline the wrong grammar).
Question:
“If you could be either water or fire, which would you be and why?”
Answer:
“Well, I’m a human being and I don’t know how it is to be fire or water, and from that reason I really don’t have answer on this question because I’m a human being, I’m a girl, who has an emotion, and fire and water don’t.”
My Take: Perhaps it’s the first time she has run across a “what if” question. Forgive the lady.
In the Hot Seat: Miss Serbia Sanja Papic
#4:Miss Teen USA 2007
Perdone Senyor, I spoke to soon. This young lady here has truly made the serious, hilarious but no one’s complaining. You know this is entertainment at its best.
Question: “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
Answer:
“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some . . . people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over HERE in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children”.
My Take: Very global answer my dear. Neat!
In the Hot Seat: Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss South Carolina Teen
#3: Miss Panama 2009 on Confucius
Wow! For the nth time, I spoke too soon. This beautiful lady here sounds very Confucius, I mean confused, yes definitely confused. Because according to her those two words are related.
Question: “Explain the following quote by Confucius: ‘Learning without thought is labour lost”
Answer:
“Good evening Panama!” “Confucius was one of whom invented confusion, and that’s why, eh…one of the most ancient, he was one of the Chinese. Japanese who was one of the most ancient. Thank you.”
My Take: Ah, Confucius, why are you so confusing? You should change your name to another, perhaps…
In the Hot Seat: Giosue Cozzarelli
#2: Miss Universe 2012 on Laws
Let’s not be too legalistic. Why don’t we just do some surfing and enjoy our lives? Eh? What do you think?
Question: “If you could make a new law, what would it be? And explain why.”
Answer:
“I think that any leys (read laws) there are in Constitution or in life, are already made. I think that we should have, uh, a straight way to go in our similar, or, eh, in our lives as is this. For example, I’m a surfer, and I think that the best wave that I can take is the wave that I wait for it. So please do our only, eh, law that we can do. Thank you, Vegas!”
My Take: At least she thanked Vegas. Wait, perhaps there are some new surfing spots in the county.
In the Hot Seat: Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero

“If I have to pick out of the five senses, I would pick seeing, because seeing is the best sense that we can ever see, because seeing is believing, and believing into what you see is perfect… and… um… out of all those senses… seeing… would really be wonderful… thank you… that will be it.”
My Take: She’s trying to rephrase “Seeing is believing”. At least she tried.
