After a controversial mix-up of announcements, our very own Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe 2015. 42 years after the last Filipina, Margie Moran-Floirendo, won the same title.
Beauty pageants are a big deal for us. Whether it’s Miss Universe or a local barangay pageant, we’d sit in the audience hoping our favorite candidate wins. Joining a pageant is a different story. Imagine all the pressure you’ll feel knowing people are counting on you to win, especially if it’s a major pageant like Binibining Pilipinas or Miss Earth. You need to show that you are confident enough, as well as provide a good answer during the question and answer portion, to grab the title. With that, here are the top 10 factors that could help you win that beauty pageant title.
Make-up
You obviously don’t want to look like a clown when you’re on stage, so don’t wear too much make up. Make-up is supposed to enhance your features, not cover it, so don’t cake your face with too much foundation, canceller, and powder. Go for something that’s also camera friendly. Try not to use products that have a lot of SPF in them since they tend to reflect light, giving you that ghostly appearance in photos with flash. Also, use colors that work for your skin tone. Avoid foundation that’s too dark or too light, as well as eye shadow, blush, and lipstick colors that might not work for you.
Dresses
The audience often waits for the evening gown portion of the pageant to see how well the contestant carries herself in a long gown. Choose one that flatters your figure. Bold colors make a statement, but the classic black dress looks good on anyone. Try not to wear something too reveling or too complicated to put on. You want to look elegant and classy. Big pageants often have designers to sponsor the contestant’s dresses for them, so if you’re lucky, you might have a chance to wear a beautiful evening gown by a renowned local designer.
Shoes
Picking out the right shoes is as important as choosing the right dress to wear. It’s so important for pageant contestants to have a flawless head-to-toe look during their competition. The most common pageant shoes are clear, platform stilettos that have 5 inch heels or higher, but nowadays, pageant contestants choose to wear silver or gold stilettos with rhinestones details. Nude is also a great choice that can match any dress or swimsuit.
Facial Expression
Joining a pageant will let you experience a rollercoaster of emotions. It can be scary and exciting, dreadful and fun, even happy and sad at the same time. Showing off facial expressions like moving your lips, smiling, or wrinkling your nose can help send your emotions out to the audience. Make them see how exited you are through your expressions. It gives you life and makes you light up, rather than looking dull and bored as you make your way down the stage for your walk.
Eyes
The eyes are the windows to the soul, and you can certainly captivate anyone with just one look. The eyes can be used to make you standout. Use makeup and lashes to extenuate them, but don’t overdo it. Putting too much eye makeup and lashes on can make your eyes look small. Skip colored contact lenses. If you have poor eyesight, use clear contact lenses that are comfortable enough to wear throughout the pageant.
Crowd
Having a group of people cheering on for you during a pageant can make a world of difference. Knowing you have supporters backing you up can give you a huge confidence boost, which can affect your performance. Cheers and applauses can help give you a more positive feeling. A little encouragement from your friends or family, or anyone who believes that you got what it takes can help you win that title.
Walk
They say that a beauty queen needs to have her own signature walk, like Shamcey Supsup’s Tsunami Walk and Janine Tugonon’s Cobra Walk. Having a distinct walk when you’re lined up with other beautiful girls can really make you stand out. Walking on stage takes a bit of practice. Before you walk, make sure you breathe in deeply. This opens you up by lifting your shoulders up. Walking in a curvy line helps give you that gliding effect. The pageant turn –when you turn your body and look over your shoulder- can be great when posing for photos.
Brains
The dreaded question and answer portion is often what throws many beauty pageant candidates off focus. Giving an answer that will make you sound like a bimbo is the last thing you want to happen. Some pageants give the participants a list of the questions before hand so they can prepare. However, if they give the question right there and then, the best thing for you to do is give an answer that’s true to your values and beliefs. There are no right or wrong answers to a pageant question, so just relax and give the best answer you can think of.
Personality
Being congenial is one of the best traits to have in a pageant. Getting along with others can get you a long way. Being warm and friendly not only gets you new friends, but also keeps off any drama that’s common in beauty pageants. The judges also take in consideration how well you get along with the other contestants. Many pageants have a Miss Congeniality title, and the winner is chosen by the candidates themselves. So even if you don’t get to win the main pageant title, at least you made a lot of new friends.
Smile
The best thing a woman can put on is a smile. Smiling shows that you’re happy and that you’re enjoying yourself. It can liven up your face, lift your eyes, give you a confidence boost, and places you in a better mood. Seeing someone smile also makes them more likeable, which can affect your score on the judge’s cards. So don’t forget to smile and show the world how beautiful you are.
