BREAKING: Filipino Scientists set to win share of UK’s Newton Prize Award!

A Filipino scientist is set to win the prestigious Newton Prize Award and will get a share of £1million grant this January 28,2020 in Manila. This scientist with the best research and innovation tackling current socials issues like health and development of malaria, antimicrobial resistance, water energy, poultry infection, and the like. The prize is shared among the other winners of Indonesia, China, and Philippines; while an additional prize for the Chair’s Award is also added.

The United Kingdom Science Minister Jo Johnson believes that international collaborations such as this can help unit world-leading researchers and universities across the globe in order to transform lives today and in the generations to come. The Newton Prize award began in 2016. It was established as an annual fund awarded to the best researcher or innovation that promotes the economic development and social welfare of Newton Fund partner countries like the Philippines.

Who will win a share of the £1million grant? Here are the top five Filipino scientists who are now in the final rounds for the Newton Prize Award:

  1. Dr Devendra Saroj (University of Surrey) and Professor Michael Angelo Promentilla (De La Salle University)

PROJECT: Water-energy-nutrient Nexus in the Cities of the Future

DELIVERY PARTNERS: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Department of Science and Technology, Philippines

  1. Professor Wamadeva Balachandran (Brunel University London) and Dr. Dennis Umali (University of Philippines Los Banos)

PROJECT: Low-cost Portable Molecular Diagnostic Platform for Rapid Detection of Poultry Infectious Pathogens (LMDP)

DELIVERY PARTNERS: Biotechnology and Biosciences Research Council and the Department of Agriculture, Philippines

DELIVERY PARTNERS: British Council and the Department of Science and Technology, Philippines.

Altogether with this endeavor, the British Council is still working with a partnership with the Philippine Government in order to deliver programs under the Newton Agham Programme that surely benefit Filipino researchers.
